Not all electronic time stamps are equal. There are two main categories: the ordinary (non-qualified) time stamp, issued by an arbitrary server without regulatory supervision and with limited evidential value, and the qualified electronic time stamp, issued by a licensed qualified trust service provider (QTSP) under the eIDAS Regulation. Only the qualified time stamp has automatic legal effect across the EU and is recognised by courts without the need for additional proof.

Prices for qualified time stamps vary significantly. Direct use of a TSA service from providers such as B-Trust or DigiSign requires technical integration and is usually designed for organisations that process thousands of time stamps per month. For individual authors and small teams, the cost per certification through direct integration can reach several euros, without counting implementation and maintenance costs.
